Wallbox or Charging Point: Are They the Same Thing?

In practice, yes. Posto de carregamento (charging point) is the formal term in Portuguese; wallbox is the trade name that caught on because most home units are mounted on a wall. When one person asks for a wallbox quote and another asks for a home charging point, they are asking for exactly the same job. You will also hear carregador eléctrico or electric car charger, and again it is the same equipment and the same work.

The distinction that really matters is between alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) charging. What gets installed at home is virtually always AC, somewhere between 3.7 kW and 22 kW depending on the property's supply. The rapid DC chargers you see at motorway service stations are a different class of equipment and a different order of investment altogether; they don't go into a private garage.

If anyone tells you that you need a rapid charger at home, be wary. A car plugged in overnight charges with room to spare on a well-sized AC installation, and that is the difference between a job costing a few hundred euros and one that makes no sense for a house.

How Much Does a Wallbox Installation Cost in Greater Porto

A wallbox installation in Greater Porto typically costs between 500 and 1,200 euros for labour and electrical materials, not counting the charger itself. What makes the price vary is almost always the distance between the consumer unit and the parking space: every metre of cable in trunking, a wall chase or conduit adds materials and hours of work. In a house in Leça da Palmeira with the consumer unit in the garage, the job is done in a morning. In a flat in Senhora da Hora with the meter on the ground floor and the parking space in the basement, the cable run can reach 30 metres and pass through shared areas.

The charger itself costs between 400 and 1,000 euros depending on the brand and features. A basic 7.4 kW wallbox without an app does the job perfectly well for overnight charging. Models with energy metering, Wi-Fi and off-peak scheduling cost more, but they let you take advantage of the tarifa bi-horária (the two-rate day/night electricity tariff), which is where the real savings are for anyone charging at home every day.

We always give a fixed quote after the site visit, never over the phone. Without seeing the consumer unit, the contracted power and the cable route, any figure given over the phone is a guess, and that is how invoices end up with nasty surprises at the bottom.

Wallboxes in Apartment Buildings: What the Law Says

In Portugal, the owner of a flat has the right to install a charging point in their own parking space. You don't need approval at an owners' meeting to go ahead, but you must notify the condomínio (the building's owners' association) of your intention beforehand, and the installation must not harm the common parts or the safety of the building. In practice, a written notice to the building administrator settles most cases. As the notice needs to be in Portuguese, we can tell you what it should include.

There are two ways of making the connection. Taking the supply from your own flat's meter is the most common option: the electricity is billed to you, but you are limited to the power you have contracted. Taking it from a dedicated meter in the common parts is better suited to buildings where several owners will want to charge, because it avoids overloading the building's rising main.

In older buildings in Porto and Matosinhos, the real obstacle is rarely legal; it is physical. Rising mains sized back in the 1970s and cable routes that are already full mean the route has to be studied before promising anything at all. That is why the site visit always comes first.

How Much Power You Actually Need

The choice between 7.4 kW single-phase and 11 or 22 kW three-phase is decided by the power you have contracted, not by the car. A 7.4 kW wallbox charges an average 60 kWh battery in about eight hours, in other words overnight, while the car is parked. For the overwhelming majority of people who use their car to commute around Greater Porto, that is more than enough.

Installing 11 or 22 kW only makes sense if you already have a three-phase supply and enough contracted power. Raising your contracted power just to charge faster usually costs more on the monthly bill than it is really worth, because you pay a higher standing charge every month to save hours you spend asleep anyway.

We always install with dedicated protection: its own circuit breaker and an RCD suited to EV charging, either Type A with DC detection or Type B, depending on what the wallbox already has built in. Plugging a wallbox into the garage's socket circuit is the wrong installation we see most often, and it is the one that trips the RCD in the middle of the night or overheats the wiring.

Do I need to increase my contracted power to install a wallbox?

Not always. With 6.9 kVA contracted you can charge at 7.4 kW if charging is scheduled for times when no other large appliances are running. We check your contracted power during the visit and, if it needs increasing, we tell you before installing.

Can I install a wallbox in my space in a shared building garage?

Yes. Portuguese law gives you that right in your own parking space; you just have to notify the condomínio in advance. We handle the technical side and tell you what that notice should include.

How long does the installation take?

A standard installation is finished in half a day to a day. Long cable runs, routes through common areas or consumer units that need work can take a full day.

Does a wallbox installation have to be certified?

Yes. It is an alteration to the electrical installation and must be carried out by a qualified technician, with its own protective devices and in line with the technical rules in force. Beyond safety, many manufacturers require a certified installation to keep the equipment's warranty valid.
